STONE BALANCING

Amidst the hurried pace of modern life in the heart of Bangkok, A KEEN HOUSE opens its doors to a slower tempo. Situated in the heart of Bangkok, this 50-square-meter sculptural landscape serves as a bridge between the chaotic pulse and the introspective pause. This place is a delicate weaving of craftsmanship and human connection, designed to cradle the heart and bring balance back to life.

The core of design is rooted in stone balancing, a quiet, meditative practice in which the hand, mind, and material move as one, and draw from the Eastern holistic philosophy, where every component coexists in harmony. 

The concept primarily manifests in four vertical balancing totems that reach a height of 5.40 meters, serving as the metaphorical blueprint for the entire space. Much like balancing stones, these totems are a tapestry of contrasting materials in different shapes and sizes: reclaimed wood, recycled stone, local wickerwork, and upcycled rice husk boards. Held together in a firm embrace, they echo the Eastern philosophy that individual parts create a greater whole. This vertical balancing act sets the tone for the wider material palette of the entire landscape, which features the tactile warmth of Phetchaburi's hand-finished lime plaster, chosen for its sustainability and Eastern soul.

The flexible logic of these totems extends directly into the layout and furniture. The concept of stone balancing physically shapes the furniture pieces themselves, many of which were conceived by carefully balancing and counter-weighting different elements and raw materials against one another. Designed with versatility in mind, each piece serves multiple functions based on the user’s interpretation. A seating stool seamlessly transitions into a side table, while small individual seating units can be assembled into a communal bench.

Through this approach, the beauty of the space remains far from static. Guided by the art of stone balancing, A KEEN HOUSE becomes a living, breathing landscape where the gentle human touch merges with sustainability. It is an architecture intended to grow, transform, absorb the stories of its visitors, and age beautifully alongside time and its people.
